VallesFamily > Kennedy set us up with his cousin, who is associated with a church close to Kibera Slum, the largest slum in Kenya. It's estimated to have 850,000 people living there, with 25,000 orphans. I can't imagine that number is accurate as it seems it would be impossible to count. It wouldn't surprise me if it was much higher than that. People moving from the country to Nairobi in hopes of making big money usually start here, including Kennedy. Shockingly enough, people actually pay to live in the slums, giving "slum lord" a new definition. This is our tour group standing in the courtyard of the church.
VallesFamily > From left to right: Dom, Kennedy's cousin, Kenna, me, Erika, Kennedy, Kennedy's other cousin, a woman who works for the church, the priest or "man of god" (what everyone called him ha ha ha) and Matteo
VallesFamily > The priest runs a church which also runs a school for the children in the slums. They gave us a good education about life there. We were told that many children want to come to school just so they can get something to eat or a glass of milk. This is their little school house.
VallesFamily > Moscow?! What part of this shop could be Russian? Here's a typical "butcher" I'd never eat meat again if this was my only option. To make matters worse, he was sitting there moving that pile of meat around - yuck!
VallesFamily > This isn't the slums, it's a pretty typical street in Nairobi
VallesFamily > Entering Kibera, you can see that it just goes on and on
VallesFamily > Looking back at where just came from

VallesFamily > This is on the outskirts of Kibera. I took this picture because I loved the contrast of the "garden center" in relation to the houses behind it. It's like a little paradise. I also wonder who is buying this furniture, most white people with money don't come into Kibera.
