VallesFamily > The kids had a couple days off of school, so we went to Western Kenya to Kennedy's village. It was an amazing experience. He comes from Bungoma which is about an hour from Lake Victoria. It's a very rural area, about 7 hours from Nairobi. It was a big deal that we went as they don't see too many Mzungos there. His cousin (who works at the Embassy) set up a great itinerary for us. Unfortunately I lost my camera, so I don't have too many pictures, luckily we had a second camera. The first stop was at her son's house, about 2 hours before Bungoma. This is his place. He lives there with his wife and two small children. This was our first exposure to how Kenyan's are living outside of the city. This is a nice house as Kenyan standard goes. It's made of brick, only has two rooms, no electricity or running water.
VallesFamily > We were all immediately brought into the main room of the home and served lunch which consisted of rice, a polenta type bread that is typical here, two types of chicken, flat bread and potatoes. It was served on the table you see here and we all ate on our laps. The food was actually good.
VallesFamily > After lunch Mama Joy (her daughter's name is Joy so that's what they call her) took us for a tour through their Shamba (their little plot of land). She showed us how she grows corn and beans to dry and have ground up at the mill to get them through the dry season.
VallesFamily > This is joy sitting in their kitchen. It's always a small mud hut off the main house. As you can see, she prepared the whole meal from a small fire. I asked if the house was separate for safety reasons, and she said no, it's only because of the smoke. This little fire pit is the only means of cooking and heating water she has.
VallesFamily > This is where she puts her dirty dishes as you can see
VallesFamily > This is where she gets her water. She's actually lucky that she has a well on her Shamba, they usually have to go a ways with a jug to get fresh water.
VallesFamily > Here's the toilet which is like an outhouse, well, except you have to squat. It's off the main house and it's terrible because at night this little tiny room is filled with crickets and cockroaches.
VallesFamily > Here's the shower. Of course they don't have running water, so the only bath option is to bring in a bin of hot water and do the best you can. I think it's nice that they actually have this stall though.
VallesFamily > The kids and Joy, they came to the neighbor to see the new baby calf behind them.
